Who is eligible to apply?

Applications are open to researchers based anywhere in the world. We particularly encourage applications from researchers based in Africa, either as individuals or through their host institution or employing organisation.

Projects must focus on impacts on Sub-Saharan Africa and align with the objectives of the Request for Proposals.

Applicants must be able to receive grant or contract funding directly, or identify a host institution able to receive and manage funds on their behalf. Proposals may include collaborators from multiple organisations and countries where relevant expertise is required.

How much funding is available?

Applicants can apply for up to £70,000 per project. We expect to fund up to 5 projects through this call. Budgets should include a clear and realistic breakdown of costs, including salary or personnel, equipment, facilities and infrastructure, indirect costs or overheads, and other project costs.

There is no requirement for match funding.

How do I apply?

Applications open on 3rd July 2026. To apply, download and review the Request for Proposals, which includes application guidance. You should then complete the Application Form and submit it by email to submissions@srmimpactsrfp.info.

Applications must be received by 7th August 2026 at 14:00 BST.

A Due Diligence Form is also available for information but does not need to be submitted with your application. Only shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete this form.

How will applications be assessed?

All applications will first undergo an eligibility check. Applications that are eligible and within scope will be reviewed by an expert panel against the stated assessment criteria included in the Request for Proposals.

All applications will first undergo an eligibility and scope assessment. Eligible applications will then be reviewed against the published evaluation criteria.

The strongest applications will be shortlisted and invited to participate in a virtual interview between 31st August and 8th September 2026.

Shortlisted applicants will also be required to submit a Due Diligence Form before final funding decisions are made.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome on 18th September 2026.

What are the project timelines and what happens after approval?

Projects may run for up to 18 months and must be completed no later than 31st July 2028.

Applicants are required to specify a proposed start date and project duration in their application.

The contracting period will run from 21st September to 16th October 2026, during which project scope, milestones, budgets, and contractual arrangements may be finalised.

All contracts must be signed by 16th October 2026.

What contractual and compliance requirements apply?

Successful applicants will be required to complete due diligence and enter into a formal contract with the University of Exeter.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide information about organisational governance, policies, financial management arrangements, conflicts of interest, and sanctions compliance through the Due Diligence Form.

All funded projects must publish outputs on an open-access basis, subject to ethical, legal, data protection, community ownership, and safety considerations. Successful applicants and their team members will also be required to sign ARIA’s Future Proofing our Climate and Weather Intellectual Property Pledge.
